Firstly, please let me excuse the use of so many superlative’s in the following paragraph’s. Anyone who knows me knows I’m the master of the understatement, so when I say that these jeans have to be the best Indigo-Indigo jeans I’ve encountered to date, then you’ll know I’m not messing about. The 15oz extra low tension weave fabric (texas cotton) has possibly the best feel ever – it’s the most irregular, low tension weave that Tanuki have used to date and they guarantee that this fabric will produce fast, high contrast fades. The characteristics of the slub and nep should also produce some snowy highlights on the fabric surface after some wear.
So, how best to describe these jeans. If you have ever experienced a pair of Pure Blue Japan XX012’s then that’s a good starting point. Now, add more slub and nep and you’re getting close. I’m a big fan of Pure Blue Japans Indigo XX012’s but honestly, these Tanuki’s appeal to me even more. Of course my tastes may differ to yours, so best get your hands on them and make your own mind up. More importantly (for me), the Tanuki’s have a much better fit too, which adds to their appeal to me even more. On the topic of fits, we are focusing on the Slim and Tapered versions in this review but we will add the Ultra Slim fit too over the next week. If you read my review of Tanuki’s Natural Indigo 16.5oz models then you’ll know where I’m coming from regarding their fabrics having a unique characteristic, but man… these are well tasty and I really love the vibe of them.
I could go on and on into great detail, but I’m a busy guy, and there are other people better placed to do that than me. We just wanted to post some studio shots to show you how the fits look when worn.
So what do we think?
All we can say is – we think they are pretty awesome. Tanuki have hit the ball waaaaaay out of the park yet again. 🙂

Tanuki are somewhat of a mystery. They are a new denim label built by a collective of experienced and gifted craftsmen based in Okayama. The brand prides itself on mastering every level of the denim making process. With decades of experience in denim manufacturing, the “super-team” behind Tanuki have the ability to manipulate shuttle looms to create unique denim fabrics, sewing them into jeans that elevate Japanese denim to a new level. The Artisans behind the Tanuki brand wish to remain anonymous, as the products are meant to speak for themselves.
The artisans behind Tanuki are traditional denim makers, but just as the mythical raccoon-dog can change its shape, they also plan on transforming the image of traditional denim. Their logo 二 (Ni), is the Japanese character for two, and it also represents their concept. The bottom line represents the past, tradition, establishment, and peace. The top line represents the future, change, and strength. The red and white mirrors the colours of the Japanese flag, which honours their roots as Japanese denim makers.

If you want to buy the Ultra Slim fit in these jeans you will need to size up one, maybe even 2 sizes. They sit lower on the hip than the Tapered and Slim models and are much smaller/tighter fit. As an example I wear a 32″ in the Tapered fit but had to size up to a 36 to get a comfortable fit in the Ultra Slim. We will add some Ultra Slim fit shots soon.
In fact, while we are talking about sizes here’s my overall guide to fits if you want to buy Tanuki’s.
- Slim Fit – Buy your size
- Tapered Fit – Size down one size
- Ultra Slim Fit – Size up 2
