“Pink? …but not just for Girls”
Momotaro 0701 – Currently 6 months or so wear, with one soak
To give you a bit of background on these, I have probably worn them the least out of all my pairs, but they are the pair that set me off into the world of Raw Selvedge Denim – much to my Partner and my two Children’s despair. 🙂
The Momotaro 0701 is a 15.7oz Unsanforised selvage denim made of 100% Zimbabwe Cotton. A tight straight fit which apparently gives you a bit of a fight before revealing the fades. Waist sizing is (for someone like me who is a relative newbie) terribly easy to work out. If you are a 33” waist, buy a 34” waist. As you can expect about an inch to come off after the first soak. I have ballooned back up to a 34” but the 0701’s still fit just perfect around the waist with plenty of room for the odd hand adjustment 😉 So I am assuming they stretch back over time, along with me.
Now, from the first soak, I “tanned the arse” out of these to use a good Scottish phrase 🙂 which in English means I wore them a lot every week day for about 3 months or so. But wasn’t seeing much in the way of notable fades. Yeah the usual around seams, pockets and the button fly area, but nothing spectacular in terms of stacking, whiskers, or honeycombs. However, about a month ago I started wearing them again, and to my surprise the “Fades Fairy” came and blessed me! I now have some whiskers and honeycombs beginning to form. So I am now back on it, checking every day for further evidence of that signature electric blue that Momotaro do so well.
So, What Do I Think
You always have a special place in your heart for your first love. The same goes with Denim. I have 2 pairs of Momo’s now, 0701’s and the 0202’s (Which have faded superbly and are now on the verge of retirement) They fit the way I like, perfect around the waist and crotch thanks to a low rise, and they are a little loose around the lower leg. This makes them my go to jeans with a pair of my chunkier trainers like Nike Air Max 90’s or Shox. The material isn’t as slubby as pair of PBJ or Tanuki’s but it’s in no way detrimental to the look and feel. These are quality, quality denims and can take a proper pounding of daily use for long periods of time and still hold together as new (So far no blowouts). The pink inseam thread and selvedge are a real head turner, especially in Scotland, where guys tend to trend towards Alpha! 😉
Pricing wise you can’t go wrong at around £169 inc shipping Direct from Japan. I shop at Denimio, but Okayama Denim are selling at the same price. Why direct from Japan? …well £60 less than USA Prices and up to £80 less than some European stockists, THAT’S WHY. Delivery is just as quick with a 4/5 day turnaround time and customer service from Denimio is second to none. Even with import charges you are saving a good bit of cash.
