John was commissioned by The National Theatre Scotland for a special nation-wide photography project to reaffirm its position as a 'theatre without walls,' a decade after its inception. The National Theatre Scotland is one of the few national theatre companies in the world not to have its own bricks and mortar venue, although this is not something that they feel is a hindrance as the 'theatre without walls' model enables National Theatre Scotland to take its work wherever there is an audience to enjoy it. The Box Office Project was conceived to provide artwork which conveys this message and it provided John with an an interesting brief:
"I was honoured to be commissioned by the National Theatre of Scotland to shoot their Box Office project. The project provided a great opportunity to bring my photography skills to bear to help deliver an exciting, and creative concept. It's always a pleasure to shoot for the Arts and it was great to work in conjunction with Roberta Doyle at NTS to bring this exciting project to a satisfactory conclusion."
"It was a pleasure to work for such a prestigious client and I was delighted that my images were so well received as both myself and the team put a lot of hard work into delivering the brief. Commercial briefs are usually quite restricted and it was great that Roberta allowed me the latitude to collaborate so closely and bring my own creative input to the project."
